"God is an immediate and practical help...."I grew up with Christian Science being a part of my family’s everyday experience which I continued once I started my own family of four today. With two active sons and our involvement in outdoor adventures, art and travel, we have seen and experienced healing and comfort from all angles of life!
One thing I have learned over and over again is that God is an immediate and practical help in every circumstance, guiding and protecting, healing and comforting.
Once when I was kayaking down the Ocoee, a whitewater river in Tennessee, my kayak tipped over right before a major rapid. The strong current literally sucked me out of my boat and pulled me under a large undercut rock where I was held there by the powerful currents.
I remember thinking that people can die under these situations, but I had a choice to panic or pray. I prayed. It was a quick and pleading "Father!" Immediately, I felt calm. I opened my eyes, reached out toward the sunlight I could see upstream of the rock and I was out.
Concerned friends were waiting for me and said I was under water for a long time, but all I remember is my choice, my prayer and getting swept to safety.
This was a dramatic lesson that taught me that God, good, is always present. Reaching out to God has practical results and I have a lifetime of seeing those results in healing nausea, restoring badly burned skin, dissolving migraines, flushing out ear infections; as well as removing temptation in relationships, finding a job, a college, a home and companionship, experiencing safety while traveling; I've had harmonious pregnancies and many more instances of healing in my life.
When I think of how I can give back some of the blessings and beneifts that Christian Science has given me, I know that being in the Christian Science practice is the most loving and practical thing I can do -- not only for myself and my family, but for my friends, my various and growing communities and, I hope, for the world.
