Recently I had requests from two pet owners for prayerful treatment for their pets.  Throughout the day, I noticed that Mocha, my lovable Rottweiler, stayed uncommonly close to me. She has always been close by when I do my morning prayer work, and that day, I named her my assistant.  Later on, I got the happy news from both pet owners that all was well.

I thought about the deep and uncluttered spirituality of animals.  They have much to teach us!  The lessons from animals is an old, old story.  In the Bible, the book of Job has this to say:

But ask the  animals what they think—let them teach you;
let the birds tell you what's  going on.
Put your ear to the earth—learn the basics.
Listen—the fish in the ocean will tell you their stories.
Isn't it clear that they all  know and  agree that God is sovereign,
that he holds all things in his hand--
Every living soul, yes, every breathing  creature?
Isn't this all just common sense?

Each animal lover I know has a bond with their furry and feathered friends that can only be explained in spiritual qualities.  Mocha has been the furry representative of joy, forgiveness, present-mindedness, patience, contentment, spontaneity, obedience and stability.  She is a reminder that these qualities are reflections of God.  When I have been sad, or jumping for joy, or simply quiet and praying, she responds with those healing qualities of God.   Mocha simply teaches me that God's tender loving care is right here and tangible.

What spiritual lessons have your pets taught you?

The whole essence of this experience just came back to me recently: when I was three I'd wandered off into a hidden area near my house. I remember playing in the grass and then I must have fallen asleep because when I woke up it was twilight. I looked up and all around me were many dogs, all of us lying in a circle with one dog sitting alertly beside me. I knew that they were there guarding me and that the one sitting beside me was in charge :) I felt the most profound safety and calm enveloping me... I got up and walked home to find a very relieved mom... This has come back to me as evidence of the purpose and the harmony between all of God's creatures... And that the understanding of this isn't learned, it's a fact that we innately know!

How about these comments, from Time4Thinkers?

Kristen says:

I want to add a similar comment to “LittleChilds” prayer for the horses. One day I was praying to help my friend, whose husband had recently announced that he was leaving her and the children. Her property was a large hilly area, and one-time horse ranch. I was reading the Bible Lesson, while leaning back in a chair with my legs propped onto a wood cross bar fence. The fences kept out several of the neighbor’s horses, though I’d never seen them.

As I was soaking in the divine truth’s of these healing ideas from our Bible Lesson, tears started to flow, as I gained new insights into God’s overarching love for His/Her children. Just then, the earth started to rumble, and the noise sounded like a hurricane coming straight up the hill. All of a sudden, three horses charged up to the fence and then just stopped- their heads arched over the fence between us. In complete silence they starred at me. I said nothing, and couldn’t move for the shock of it all. Then, one horse snorted at me, and moved his head up & down urging me to keep reading. I read aloud, the entire Bible Lesson, and we four soaked up the healing truths about harmony and love and healing. When I finished reading, they jerked their heads back, turned and left.

My friend’s husband did not return, but her joy came in the morning, and she and her children quickly found a new, and better life together. And I, and three horses were God’s witnesses to Love’s healing power.

LittleChild says:

Oh my gosh, Kristen, I know just how you felt! That happened to me once, when I was reading the Bible Lesson in a prison picnic area, across the driveway from four prison horses grazing in a field. When I looked up, I saw that three of the horses had come up to the fence, as close to me as they could get. The fourth stood behind a nearby bush. All four remained immobile (except for an occasional swish of their tails) the entire half-hour or more that I read the Lesson.

When the guards told me it was time to pick up my friend who was visiting inside the prison, the horses immediately started moving — stretching their legs, rolling on the grass, and sauntering back to the middle of the field to resume grazing.

Why is this an example of God’s healing power? Because I had driven several hours to the prison with the inmate’s mom, and had intended to go in with her to see him. But when we got there, I learned that the system hadn’t completed my paperwork, so I was denied entry. Instead of getting upset and frustrated, which would’ve been my typical reaction in the past, I took the news graciously and humbly. So, the joy of seeing the holy horses respond to the Lesson on “Spirit” was a wonderful reward from that same Spirit!
